As a classroom teacher, I quickly noticed that names were more than handy labels of identification. After all, in case after case, I could not deny that students with the same name had similar personalities. For instance, you can hear and see the word RIVER, but you probably won’t consciously know that this combination of vowels and consonants silently stirs movement and encourages constant change and fluctuation. Consider the work of Dr. Masuro Emoto of Japan (Messages from Water). Dr. Emoto discovered that when words are taped to a beaker of water, the water molecules respond to the “frequency” of the word by forming crystal patterns that are either organized or chaotic. Since the earth, (and we as human beings) are over 70% water, Dr. Emoto’s study gives evidence that life responds to language in ways we can’t imagine if we insist on focusing only on what is evident to the five senses.
